Minimalist Toy Collection for a Two Year Old

One of the areas in which I most struggle with minimalism is my son’s toys. It’s pretty clear that the benefits of toy minimalism go well beyond making it easier to clean up. And who wouldn’t want to lengthen their toddler’s attention span? But at the same time, I hate the idea of missing out on the one toy that is going to turn him in to a genius. (Newflash: No toy is going to do that. But that doesn’t change the fact I worry about it.)

Raising an Adventurous Eater: Three Tips

Of the interests that brought my husband and I together on our first date, travel and food were two of the top three. (The third was a closely related one—wine.) With this in mind, it was important to us that Luca be an adventurous eater. That doesn’t mean he had to be willing to eat insects in preschool, but it did mean that he not be TOO picky as a toddler.

Three Toddler-Friendly Day Trips from Prague

Last year at this time we were getting settled into Prague and starting to explore the surrounding area. Having been to Prague on vacation a few years before, Fernando and I felt that we’d been able to check most of the big sights in the city off our list, and at any rate, we figured we had a long time ahead of us to explore. (Turns out we were wrong about that last point!) We hadn’t ventured out of the city yet, though, so that was what we had planned for the fall.

Building a Minimalist Wardrobe for a Toddler (Autumn 2017)

Closely related to my fascination with minimalism is my obsession for the past several years with capsule wardrobes. Unfortunately, as much as I love the idea, building one for myself has never worked. There are a variety of reasons for this, including the fact that I get anxious at the idea of throwing out my current clothes that don’t bring me joy—mostly because I’m pretty sure that all that will be left is a handful of evening gowns.

But while I haven’t been able to build one for myself, maybe it would be a good option for my son’s new wardrobe?

Is Hallstatt, Austria the cutest little town ever?

Nestled in a valley in the Salzkammergut, the small town consists primarily of a small square on the lake with a large church steeple reflecting on the water. I think the view of that church (which is incredibly simple inside, especially compared to the ornate Catholic churches in Salzburg) is the reason why Hallstatt is so popular with tourists today.

Easter Weekend in Salzburg, Austria

When my husband found out that he got three days off for Easter, any reason to stay in Prague for the weekend evaporated.  I turned to Google and started searching for Easter egg hunts in Central and Eastern Europe—or if that failed, cities where they didn’t celebrate the holiday by whipping women and girls.

Why do you have a nanny? [a/k/a “What do you do all day?” for this expat mom]

Ouch.  That’s how I feel every time someone asked me this.  Truth is, I am constantly asking myself this question and also why, even with a nanny, I can’t seem to stay on top of everything.  I am in awe of moms who work outside the home, that’s for sure.  I’m also jealous of the “trailing spouses” that I know who don’t have kids because surely they have time to get everything done, right?  (Short answer:  No.  No they don’t.)

Sintra & Cascais: 2 1/2 days with a toddler

When I asked my Facebook friends whether we should go to Lisbon or Porto (nothing like crowdsourcing your vacation plans, am I right?) a third place (albeit one close to Lisbon) kept coming up—Sintra.  One quick Pinterest search later and I knew we had to go.  So we booked our tickets for a week in Lisbon, with the intent of spending half our time in Lisbon and half in nearby Sintra.
