As we mark the end of our first full year in Europe I’ve been thinking about all the amazing places we’ve visited so far and thought it would be fun to collect some of our favorites.
Prague, Czech Republic
Maybe this is cheating since we lived there, but I continue to think that Prague is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe and one everyone should visit at least once.
This one wasn’t on our radar at all—after all, it’s about as far from Central Europe as you can get without leaving the continent—but early in our stay Fernando was sent there to do recruiting for work and Luca and I decided to tag along. We only had about a day of sightseeing as a family, but Luca and I did a little exploring on our own between naps and I absolutely loved it. Can’t wait to go back!
Even though we’d just returned from Christmas in Cancun, we were looking for a slightly warmer (than Prague) location to visit in late January and decided on Portugal. When I surveyed friends on the merits of Lisbon versus Porto, Lisbon was the pretty clear winner—in large part because of this nearby town.
From the moment we arrived, I knew we were someplace special. Honestly, I think this might be the most magical city in Europe and four days wasn’t nearly enough time.
Český Krumlov, Czech Republic
An unlikely blend of Italian and Czech architecture and design that works amazingly well together, there’s plenty to explore in this cute little town, including one of only two baroque theaters in Europe to survive all those fireworks. Plus, it’s about the same distance from Vienna as Prague, meaning even fewer excuses not to go.
